DUBLIN, Ireland – An American Airlines transatlantic flight bound for New York was forced to divert to Dublin Airport on Saturday following a medical emergency onboard.
Flight AA105, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (registration N849AN), departed London Heathrow Airport at 13:54 BST en route to John F. Kennedy International Airport.
After takeoff from runway 27R, the aircraft climbed to its cruising altitude of 36,000 feet and proceeded westward over Ireland, preparing for its transatlantic crossing. However, during this phase, the flight crew contacted Air Traffic Control (ATC) to report a medical emergency involving a passenger or crew member.
U-Turn Over Ireland
In response to the situation, the pilots made the decision to perform a precautionary U-turn over Irish airspace to ensure immediate medical assistance. The aircraft was then diverted to Dublin.
Safe Landing and Emergency Response
The aircraft landed safely on runway 28L at Dublin Airport at approximately 15:44 local time, around one hour and 50 minutes after departure. It later taxied to gate 305, where emergency medical services were already on standby.
Medical personnel boarded the aircraft upon arrival to assist the individual in distress.
Flight to Continue to New York
According to American Airlines, the flight is still expected to continue to its final destination in New York later the same day. The revised departure from Dublin has been scheduled for 16:45 local time, allowing time for the medical situation to be addressed as well as refueling and operational checks.
