WASHINGTON — United Airlines and local officials have officially unveiled a comprehensive, multi-billion dollar master plan to transform Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) into a state-of-the-art international gateway. Designed to dramatically elevate the travel experience for millions of passengers, the sweeping redevelopment centers on replacing Dulles’ outdated C/D Concourse with next-generation concourses built to accommodate larger widebody aircraft and support expanded international operations.

A major focus of the project is streamlining passenger navigation throughout the airport. The plan phases out the airport’s legacy mobile lounge shuttles in favor of direct walking tunnels and expanded AeroTrain connections, allowing travelers to walk smoothly between the main terminal, concourses, and gates. Arriving international passengers will also benefit from a direct, walkable connection to a brand-new, expanded U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility aimed at easing congestion and significantly cutting wait times.

Beyond airport transit, the initiative delivers major landside and terminal upgrades, including enhanced roadways, close-in parking, modernized check-in areas, upgraded security checkpoints, and state-of-the-art automated baggage handling systems. To top off the passenger experience, the development will expand retail and dining offerings, increase United Club lounge access, and introduce one of the largest United Polaris business class lounges in the airline's global network
