New Delhi | Aviation Update

Air India has announced significant operational adjustments to its long-haul network following airspace closures across parts of the Middle East, including Iran and Iraq. The move comes amid escalating regional tensions impacting international aviation corridors.

Alternative Routings for Long-Haul Operations

Flights between India and key destinations in North America and Europe will continue to operate. However, services are being rerouted to avoid restricted airspace.

The revised flight paths will utilize available corridors over countries such as Oman, southern Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. As a result, passengers should expect longer block times and possible schedule adjustments due to extended flying distances and operational constraints.

Technical Stops Introduced on US Routes

Select transatlantic services to:

John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)

will include technical stops at Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport in Rome.

These stops are primarily for fuel uplift and operational requirements due to extended routing and payload limitations. Passengers typically remain onboard during such technical halts.

European Flight Cancellations

The airline has cancelled six European sector flights scheduled for March 2, 2026, including:

Amritsar – Birmingham – Delhi (AI117/AI114)

Delhi – Zurich – Delhi (AI151/AI152)

Delhi – Copenhagen – Delhi (AI157/AI158)

Affected passengers are being offered rebooking options or refunds as per airline policy.

Gulf Services Remain Suspended

Operations to and from several Gulf destinations remain temporarily suspended for March 2, including:

United Arab Emirates

Saudi Arabia

Israel

Qatar

The suspension reflects ongoing safety assessments linked to the Iran–Israel regional conflict and broader Middle East airspace volatility.

Industry Impact

The rerouting strategy increases fuel burn, crew duty time, and overall operational costs for carriers operating between Asia, Europe, and North America. Airlines globally are implementing similar adjustments, underscoring the far-reaching impact of geopolitical instability on civil aviation.

Passengers are advised to monitor real-time flight updates and check with the airline before departure.
