Air Force One Carrying President Trump Returns to Base After Electrical Issue
An aircraft carrying U.S. President Donald Trump, Air Force One, returned to Joint Base Andrews on Tuesday evening about an hour after departing for Switzerland due to a reported electrical problem.
According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, the decision to turn back was taken as a precaution after an electrical issue was detected onboard shortly after takeoff.
A journalist traveling on the aircraft said that the lights in the press cabin suddenly went out some time after departure, though no immediate official announcement was made. Journalists were informed of the return approximately 30 minutes into the flight.
Following the incident, President Trump departed for Davos after midnight aboard an Air Force C-32 aircraft to attend the World Economic Forum. The Air Force C-32 is typically used by the president for domestic travel, particularly to smaller airports.
The two Air Force One aircraft currently in service have been operating for nearly four decades. Although Boeing is constructing replacement aircraft, the project has faced repeated delays.
Air Force One planes are equipped with advanced security features, including radiation-resistant systems, anti-missile technology, and sophisticated communications systems that allow the president to maintain military contact from anywhere in the world.
Last year, Qatar’s ruling family gifted President Trump a luxury Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet, which is planned to be added to the Air Force One fleet. However, the aircraft is currently undergoing modifications to meet U.S. security standards.
