MISrata, Libya, Sept. 19 — Libyan prosecutors have ordered the pre-trial detention of the pilot and co-pilot of a Cessna Citation Latitude after the business jet veered off the runway and was destroyed by fire at Misrata International Airport.

The incident occurred on September 14, 2026, as the aircraft, registered TC-AKF, was landing at Misrata after arriving from Istanbul. The jet was operated by Turkish charter company BKNJET and was carrying two pilots and a flight attendant. All three crew members survived the accident.

According to Libya’s Public Prosecution, investigators examined the aircraft wreckage, air traffic control records, weather information and testimony from personnel involved in the landing operation.

Prosecutors said that, during questioning approximately 24 hours after the crash, the pilot and co-pilot were confronted with evidence indicating that they had operated the aircraft while intoxicated and had disregarded aviation and public-safety regulations. The authorities subsequently ordered both pilots held in pre-trial detention while the investigation continues.

Operator disputes intoxication reports

BKNJET has disputed reports describing the pilots as arrested for flying while intoxicated. The company said the crew members were being questioned and stated that it had not received any verified test result or document confirming an alcohol-related finding.

The operator’s position means that the intoxication allegation remains part of an ongoing investigation rather than an established final finding.

Investigation continues

The crash caused the aircraft to veer off the runway and subsequently catch fire. Images from the scene showed extensive damage to the aircraft, although the cockpit area reportedly remained comparatively intact. No passengers were aboard the jet at the time.

Libyan prosecutors said the investigation will continue in accordance with national and international aviation regulations. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the landing, the crew’s actions and other factors that may have contributed to the runway excursion.

The case highlights the importance of determining the precise circumstances behind the accident before drawing final conclusions about its cause.
